The incumbent of this position is Maintenance Worker in the Interior Design Section within The Office of the Director, Interior Design Section, at the Dayton VA Medical Center (VAMC), Dayton Ohio.The Dayton VAMC is a complexity level 1 facility with approximately 63 buildings/structures and over 1.6 million square feet on 240+ acres and four geographically separated Community Based Outpatient Clinics.
Duties
This position performs a variety of tasks involved in the Interior Design Section, to include but not limited to: assisting with Facility Moves; furniture assembly, delivery and installation; patching and painting; carpentry; maintenance and upkeep of fixtures, equipment, utilities, buildings and structures at the Dayton VA Medical Center. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Carpentry Duties and Furniture Installation:
Carpentry workers measure, cut, construct, install, repair, and modify wood, composite, and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy require close tolerance fit and structural soundness to produce a serviceable product.
Carpentry workers apply standard measurements, specifications, and instructions when constructing, installing, or repairing items such as frame structures, counter tops, decking, partitions, shelving, doors, walls, forms, siding, and scaffolds.
Carpentry workers need to have the ability to prep floor, lay glue down carpet squares, glue LVT and cove base; and replace ceiling tiles.
Furniture installation workers plan necessary work sequences, laying out reference points and lines.
The work also requires knowledge of blueprints and drawings and the skill necessary to interpret them; as well as work from other types of specifications such as sketches or work orders.
Painter duties:
Painters can accomplish standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying by the use of coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions, and by the application of coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth textured and decorative appearance and meet the thickness and level requirements and are free from drips and runs.
Painters determine the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited for the surface finish required. They prepare surfaces by methods such as sanding, wire brushing, filling, shaping and leveling with resins as necessary.
Painters are responsible for planning for the materials and tools needed for their jobs and notifying Supervisor when stock levels need replenished.
Material Handler Duties:
Loads furniture orders on truck and transports furniture products safely to job site.
Loads and unloads products from trailers using forklift, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
Receives, locates, stores, and re-warehouses materials as needed.
Arranges warehouse storage as needed and alerts Supervisor when commonly used items run low.
Assists with movement of personnel and furniture, as needed, throughout the Medical Center grounds in support of the Interior Design Section and the Space Coordinator which includes, moving boxes of office supplies, documents, paper, etc. and furniture using carts, furniture movers, etc.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/11/2023.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Skill set to be able to complete a project refresh from start to finish. To include but not limited to:
Carpentry work, able to measure, cut, construct, install, repair and modify wood, composite and wood substitute items.
Patch walls using finishing tools. Paint walls using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other related methods.
Remove flooring, prep floors for new flooring, lay new flooring (carpet or LVT), and install cove base.
Remove and replace ceiling tiles. Working knowledge of Systems and Modular Furniture. Disassemble, reassemble and install office furniture. The ability to trouble shoot in the field. Be able to lift heavy items, furniture and boxes for office moves.
The ability to read and interpret blue prints and use tape measures, squares, levels and other carpentry tools.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; Moderate lifting, 15-44 lbs; light lifting under 15 pounds; walking 1-8 hours; standing 1-8 hours; repeated bending 1-8 hours; climbing and use of legs and arms; must be agile and strong. Environmental factors includes outside and inside; excessive heat/cold. May be confined to awkward and cramped spaces.
