This position is responsible for journeyman-level carpentry and mason work, maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance requirements for the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Ceriter and is located within Engineering Service under the Maintenance & Operations Supervisor.

Duties

The incumbent of the position performs the following major duties and responsibilities: Carpentry: Incumbent performs the following major duties and has the following responsibilities: selects, installs, and repairs doors and door accessories, windows, and structural members, such as wood or metal studding, floor and ceiling joists, roof rafters, flooring, and roof sheathing; installs suspended ceilings, insulation, paneling, resilient floor covering, rubber base, shelving, shingles, wall and floor cabinets, carpeting, plastic laminate on wall, hangs and finishes drywall; constructs/ installs counter tops, cabinets, and items of a special nature which cannot be purchased due to uncommon measurements/ needs, etc. Performs maintenance, repair and/or construction of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, tile, stone, and other related materials. Incumbent repairs/ restores furniture by reproducing parts; reproduces building parts made of wood, such as cornice, antique moldings, windows, etc. Incumbent may occasionally drive a truck up to 11/2 tons to deliver materials and install outdoor Christmas decorations. Assist roofers in the application of roofing. Must have knowledge of and be able to use any of the accepted trade methods and techniques to coordinate the accomplishment of large or small jobs; be accomplished in the use and set up of power and hand tools to cut, tool, and resurface wood and wood substitutes, cutting bevels, rabbets, chamfers, dados, and miter joints, laminating and bending of materials; able to sharpen and maintain tools of the trade, such as saws, saw blades, chisels, etc., as well as shop equipment, such as table saw, jointer, surface and mortise machine; able to read, interpret and apply blueprints and specifications of a complicated nature, such as VA Master Installation specifications; have a good knowledge of advanced shop math and be able to use and apply references contained on a carpenter square as needed in laying out angles and complex cuts. Masonry: Maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone. Grade 10 masons work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches. They plan and lay out the work to be done, select the proper tools, determine materials to be used, and accomplish the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices. They lay common and face brick, cinder and cement block, glass block, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks. Must have knowledge of the masonry trade in planning work and determining methods and techniques to be used. They must have skill in cutting and shaping brick, block, and stone in constructing and repairing window and door 0penings, and corners. At this level, masons must have a knowledge of the techniques and procedures of brick, block, and stonework. In addition to laying whole brick and block, they must have the skill necessary to cut and shape brick to complete corners. They must have the knowledge necessary to enable them to construct windowsills, lintels, and arches capable of supporting the walls above the openings. In sealing off windows and doors, they must ensure that courses are laid evenly and that completed work _blends with existing brickwork. Masons must be skilled in use of the trowel in spreading mortar and finishing joints and in the use of gauge line, spirit level, and plumb bob in obtaining straight courses. They use air hammers, hand hammers, chisels, and crowbars to remove portions of walls and in preparing damaged areas for repair. In mixing mortar, they must ensure that the proper proportions of sand, lime, cement, and water are used to obtain desired consistency. In addition, they must be able to use a variety of hand and power tools such· as brick or napping hammer, brick or skill saw in cutting and shaping brick and axe, pick, chisel, and hammer in cutting or shaping stone. General Maintenance: The incumbent must have knowledge and skill that includes the following: Laying floor tile, such as vinyl composition tile, carpet tile, lock maintenance, masonry, ceramic tiles, grouting, and bricklaying, laying out and installing ceiling grid and ceiling tile, framing drywall partitions, finishing drywall, plastering, and general carpentry work, installing door closures and door stops, hanging bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc., installing safety treads on steps, cuts and installs various types of glass. Work is assigned to the incumbent by the supervisor and others through logbooks, work orders, engineering drawings or orally. Is responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references, and efficient procedures.
