The incumbent of the position is a Maintenance Mechanic in the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Unit, Facilities Management Service. This position is established to perform journeyman-level work in the maintenance and repair of the food preparation cook-chill system and other dietetic equipment at this Medical Center. This system is a vital component of Nutrition and Food Service's ability to provide food production, processing and delivery for several VA Medical Centers in the VISN 10 region.

Duties

On a regular and recurring basis, the incumbent of the position performs the following major duties and responsibilities: a. Incumbent is responsible for the proper, safe and efficient maintenance of the food preparation cook-chill system, and heat-on-tray delivery equipment. This system includes chill blast chiller, convection (rethermalization) tray delivery carts and Retherm Module-Single-Bay Units. b. Incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of all other dietetic equipment that includes, but is not limited to, dish machines, food choppers, food mixers, food slicers, dish conveyors, garbage disposals and grinders, pot and pan washers, all types of food and supply carts, lowerator and other food-related mechanical equipment. c. Incumbent shall accomplish maintenance (preventive or maintenance and repair) as required, including inspection, lubrication, adjustment, cleaning, overhaul and repair of all machinery, equipment and working spaces. This includes, but is not limited to, disassembling, cleaning and reassembling various traps, filters and strainers, detecting scale/corrosion and applying proper preventive chemical treatment. d. Incumbent must maintain and complete official records such as logbooks, recording data obtained from gauges, thermometers, etc. Must establish and maintain records of PM and equipment repairs. Incumbent traces and locates trouble and defects by visual check or by using a variety of test equipment such as test lamps, ohm/ammeters, receptacle testers and voltmeters. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM Position Description Title/PD#: AC Maintenance Mechanic/PD025060 and PD92144A Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to stand for long periods of time, work in confined or awkward/cramped spaces, be agile, strong and able to adapt to heat, dampness, etc. Must be able to lift heavy objects. Duties are active involving climbing, pulling, kneeling, bending and walking for prolonged periods. Incumbent works inside and outside, is exposed to danger of falling and from falling objects, cuts, bruises, electrical shock, burns and mashed fingers, etc.
