This position is responsible for journeyman-level carpentry and mason work, maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance requirements for the Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is located within Engineering Service under the Maintenance & Operations Supervisor.
Duties
Carpentry: Maintenance Mechanic performs the following major duties and has the following responsibilities: selects, installs, and repairs doors and door accessories, windows, and structural members, such as wood or metal studding, floor and ceiling joists, roof rafters, flooring, and roof sheathing; installs suspended ceilings, insulation, paneling, resilient floor covering, rubber base, shelving, shingles, wall and floor cabinets, carpeting, plastic laminate on wall, hangs and finishes drywall; constructs/ installs counter tops, cabinets, and items of a special nature which cannot be purchased due to uncommon measurements/ needs, etc.
Masonry: Maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone. Grade 10 masons work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches. They plan and lay out the work to be done, select the proper tools, determine materials to be used, and accomplish the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM, subject to night, weekend and holiday callback

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be able to stoop, bend and stand for long periods of time; climb and work on ladders, scaffolding and roof tops. Must have sufficient strength to lift paneling, plywood sheets, doors, beams, etc. Some work in this position requires much overhead arm movement. The Maintenance Mechanic is required daily to work strenuously and occasionally may lift and carry items of up to 40 pounds or more unassisted and lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers Exposed to a full array of weather conditions.
