Duties
Provides advice to patients and family via phone and in person on health care related confidential topics. Ensures proper handling of Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
Independently handles patient and/or customer concerns, working with patients in a supporting role, e. g. experience making clinical appointments, processing referrals, understanding TRICARE health benefits in a military culture.
Incumbent will research available policies, procedures, resources, and services to patients and/or family members. Present the patients problems, opinions, and needs to appropriate staff and management for resolution.
Works with health care providers and other support staff to resolve problems and minimize patient complaints.
Maintain record of patient inquiries, establishes Excel spreadsheet to enter patients data and capture workload, and produces case summaries and reports.
Create cumulative reports which include categorization of patient inquiries to track trends and identify opportunities for improvement of care.
Participates in patient advocacy professional groups, for the purpose of improving communication, improved public relations, professional growth, and the opportunity to share experiences of the military healthcare system.

- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Minimum requirement:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing the following: initial point of contact pertaining to patient rights and/or advocacy; assisting patients in understanding their rights and benefits in addition to their responsibilities; working with health care providers and other support staff to resolve problems and minimize patient issues; maintaining records of patient inquiries, establishing Excel spreadsheets to enter patients' data and capture workload, and producing case summaries and reports; analyzes data of patient inquiries to track trends and identify opportunities for improvement of patient care; initiating action or changes necessary to correct problem situations, and reports on corrective actions taken. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: HealthCare Management, Healthcare Education, Public Health or Communications. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
