The position is at the full performance level located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, VA Medical Center (VAMC) in the Engineering Service, Electrical Shop, Maintenance & Repair Section. The primary purpose of the position is to serve the Veterans under the direction of the Supervisor, Electrical Shop. This includes the functions of the Electrical Shop at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Plans and lays out proposed installation of circuits from written and verbal instructions. Performs general maintenance, diagnostic tests, repair, modification, and overhaul involving a variety of commercial and industrial type electrical devices and equipment including power control panels, transformers, generators, relays, and alternators. Tests, repairs, modifies, and overhauls a variety of equipment such as AC/DC monitors, alternators, transformers, generators, remote controls, relays, power control panels, and electrically powered equipment. Identifies mechanisms, materials, and component parts from a knowledge of descriptions, color codes, symbols, schematics, and manufacturers codes number. Maintain security of all assigned tools, equipment, and materials Report missing items to the supervisor Maintain a safe work area, utilizing all assigned or provided safety equipment and clothing. Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday, Thursday, Friday - 3:00pm - 11:30pm; Saturday, Sunday - 12:00pm - 8:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD13913A Recruitment Incentive: Not authorized

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Working Conditions The work is performed both inside and outside. Electricians are sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather, in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more; and in close quarters such as manholes, attics or crawl spaces. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns and rotary devices such as electrical motors. They are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Physical Effort Electricians make repairs and installations from ladders scaffolding, platforms and other hard to reach places. This requires them to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Electricians frequently lift and carry tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds.
