You will serve as a ELECTRICIAN in the ELECTRICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will install, maintain, repair, modify and test various shipboard electrical systems/controls, electrically operated equipment, electrical lights and heavy equipment. You will install electrical pressure hull fittings, bulkhead fittings, wire ways. You will install cables for IC circuits, auxiliary power, main propulsion instrumentation, sonar, radio, fire control and ASW systems. Your will install maintain, repair nuclear shipboard electrical/electronic equipment systems, controls, operation equipment, instrumentation, refueling communication systems and temporary nuclear support systems. You will assemble, charge, install, repair, maintain and test submarine main storage batteries.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Installing, modifying, repairing, testing, and maintaining various shipboard electrical systems, electrical controls, electrically operated equipment, electrical lights and heavy equipment. Wiring electrical equipment aboard the ship for all controls and instrumentation necessary to operate the nuclear plant. Troubleshooting electrical systems to determine and correct malfunctions through the utilization of written guides, blueprints, technical manuals, process instructions, and other technical documentation. Utilize mathematical knowledge to prepare cable requirements, layout and installations, to determine load requirements of electrical equipment. Using soldering irons, drills, wrenches and other hand tools as well as test instruments' methods.
