The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System serves the health care needs of America's Veterans in West Central and Southwestern coastal Florida by providing primary care, specialized care and related medical and social support sources. Bay Pines is a complexity level 1A facility providing comprehensive healthcare and operating 153 hospital beds (includes ICUs, medical and surgical); 33 psychiatry beds; a 112 bed Community Living Center; a 65 bed Domiciliary and a 34 bed Residential Treatment program.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Perform a wide variety of minor maintenance work which involves carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical repair work in all buildings of the Medical Center.
Determine material requirements, diagnose trouble and make necessary repairs to a variety of equipment.
Make repairs of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and mechanical nature.
Make minor repairs of electric beds, portable sinks, coffee urns, conveyors, office and ward furniture and hydraulic beds.
Perform full range of cleaning duties, ensuring the area of responsibility is within acceptable levels of cleanliness.
Reading instructions, manuals, diagrams and other job aids.
Drive a box truck from one facility to another transporting supplies and performing minor maintenance at the location.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm with possible weekend rotation, some holidays and events.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to do a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending and crawling. Must be able to work in congested areas and in tight, cramped or awkward positions. Must be able to work under and inside a variety of equipment.
May be required to carry and setup ladders and scaffolding. May be required to lift or move heavy equipment or furniture which may weigh more than 50 pounds. Working conditions may include work from ladders and scaffolds. Employee will be exposed to environmental cleaning chemicals which may be irritating. May be required to wear personal protective clothing and wear respirator in the performance of duties.
Working Conditions: Works indoors in hospital or administrative setting. Since much of the work is done in patient care buildings, the employee must be ever alert to the safety and well-being of patients, staff and fellow employees. Indoor work generally is in areas with adequate heat/air conditioning, light and ventilation. Duties may also involve work in tight, cramped, wet, dry and dusty areas. Employee may occasionally receive minor cuts, scrapes, bruises and electrical shocks. Employee may be exposed to skin irritations from strong chemical solutions.
Employee may be required to work weekends and odd tours of duty.
