As a Legal Assistant at the GS-0986-06 level with a full performance level of GS-9, you will be part of Retirement Services, Office of Personnel Management. If selected, you will be responsible for performing a variety of technical duties related to the establishment of the legal files pertaining to retirement for the organization.

Duties

Assist specialists in the review of pending U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) appeals to determine the accuracy of initial/final or reconsideration decisions. Provide support to specialists with the preparation of motions and briefs to be filed with MSPB. Assist specialists in preparing for pre-hearing conferences and hearings. Maintain the internal tracking and decision database. Review, prepare for, and assist in the defense of OPM's decisions before the Board in the more routine, straight forward appeals with the direction of the specialists.

Qualifications

For the GS 6: You must have one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the private or public sector) performing the following tasks: 1) Interpreting laws, rules, regulations or written guidelines to assist in reviewing legal or retirement cases; 2) Reviewing documents for accuracy in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; 3) Providing assistance in preparing written responses to inquiries; 4) Utilizing computer software to maintain an internal tracking database to generate reports. (Note: Your resume must fully support this experience. You must list beginning and end dates (month and year) and hours worked per week on your resume to receive credit for your experience.) Merit promotion applicants must meet time-in-grade requirement as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F. One year at the GS-05 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS6 level. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
