Duties

You will serve as PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION (CODE 105.3), RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD. You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high level trades. You will provide radiological controls for any of a wide variety of complicated repair operations involving primary systems, refueling evolutions including fuel transfer and other special projects as assigned. You will maintain required Shipyard and radiological control technician qualifications. You will improvise plans, procedures, or equipment set-ups to meet unusual, occasionally recurring needs. You will investigate deficiencies or accidents which are not fully resolved.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

GS:07 - Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS:06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Performing radiological evaluations and reviews monitoring work procedures and worksites for proper containment, ventilations, tools, and detection devices assuring compliance with approved radiological control plans. Performing various surveys correcting deficiencies and mitigating radiological risks. Participating in all phases of radiological emergencies. Utilizing techniques and procedures of radiological principles, requirements, and procedures, trade work, and the design and layout of Naval Nuclear Propulsion systems. GS:06 - Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS:05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Assisting with utilizing radiation survey to implement radiation control requirements in assigned ship or shipyard area(s). Assisting with utilizing ship and shipyard layout (including location of safety and emergency equipment, drain water and sewage systems, harbor, contaminated equipment, and radiation sources) to plan ways to control possible incidents. Utilizing ventilation, detection, filtration, and containment material, equipment, and systems to assure adequacy of various standard containment and ventilation systems and procedures. Assisting with interpreting work plans to detect deviations from approved procedures and assure compliance with radiological safety requirements. Education

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE for GS-07: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: Successfully completed one full year of graduate level education. (Transcripts must be provided.)
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.
