About the Position: You will serve as a Forensic Biologist for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory (USACIL), an organization responsible for providing forensic laboratory support to U. S. Department of Defense (DOD) criminal investigation organizations and legal agencies, as well as other federal and non-federal agencies.
Duties
Performs duties in the analysis of DNA on convicted offender samples (or similar reference samples) and the submission of the DNA typing results to the National DNA Index System through CODIS.
Processes samples for the convicted offender mission (DNA databasing) in accordance with federal law and conducts analyses to develop DNA profiles.
Independently plans, organizes and devises the approach necessary to meet the mission of the convicted offender laboratory.
Uses experience and knowledge of a wide variety of instrumental analysis, methods, genetic analysis methods, molecular biology techniques and biochemical methods.
Evaluates scientific results which may be challenging or incomplete, to determine their validity and utility.
Coordinate with experts in other forensic disciplines within and outside the Laboratory in order to develop optimal information.
Prepares formal written reports suitable for legal presentation which state results, interpretation, and professional opinions/conclusions.
Technically reviews analyses performed by other examiners.
Identifies, recommends, and conducts research and development of new or improved equipment, programs, methods and procedures.
Participates in various quality assurance activities such as standards maintenance, instrument maintenance and calibration, reagent testing, continuing education programs and proficiency testing programs.
Serves as a technical trainer of examiner and support trainees through formal and on-the-job training.
Responsible for training crime laboratory scientists and investigative and legal personnel from outside the USACIL.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Travel for extended periods of time will be required in response to, courts and life-cycle training worldwide. Travel is 15%.
- Must be able to secure and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
- Pre-appointment physical required.
- Special requirements include wearing protective equipment (e.g., respirators, safety glasses, etc.)
- Must participate in DNA profiling database within the USACIL.
- May be required to work overtime and other than normal duty hours.

Basic Requirement for a Biologist (0401):A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements to be qualified for the corresponding grades listed below:G
S-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work processing deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) samples and conducting analyses to develop DNA profiles.
GS-13 Specialized Experience: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes work conducting research and development of new and/or improved equipment, programs, methods, and procedures in the Forensic analysis of DNA.
Education
