Duties
Using a background or understanding of the medical profession, develops, coordinates, implements, and manages the Patient Safety Program for the organization.
Coordinates processes to improve/ evaluate medication management through nursing, pharmacy, and the medical staff.
Receives and reviews potential patient safety events from all sections of the MTF using the Joint Patient Safety Reporting (JPSR) system.
Evaluates/investigates cases from PSR system based on knowledge of safety, medical treatment processes, pertinent laws, and hospital program goals/practices.
Provides expertise and guidance to staff members in the areas of risk assessment, prospective risk analysis, aggregate analysis, root cause analysis, and development and evaluation of action plans.
Coordinates, facilitates and/or educates all Medical Treatment Facility assigned personnel on their roles and responsibilities in the Patient Safety Program.
Performs staff support work in short and long-range planning efforts.
Provides support to staff that ensures effective management of the facility's patient safety program.
Monitors and analyzes changes in mission, goals, new legislation, and technological advances to assess the impact these changes might have on work methods/procedures and identifies ways to address these changes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes any two or more of the following: developing and monitoring processes to improve the safety of patient beneficiaries; providing expertise and/or guidance to staff members in the areas of risk assessment, risk analysis, and evaluation of action plans; and responsible for planning of data collection methodologies to support clinical improvement initiatives. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
