Duties
As a key agency leader reporting to the Forensic Scientific Foundation Studies Program Manager, the Research Scientist engages with internal and external stakeholders to enhance understanding of scientific capabilities and limitations of forensic science methods and practices. Key responsibilities include:
- assisting with assessment of the current landscape of forensic methods and practices to establish priorities for and conduct foundation studies using publicly accessible data and information (including validation, interlaboratory studies, and proficiency testing);
- setting strategic priorities for the forensic scientific foundation studies program to identify needs, organize and conduct new foundation studies, and support and strengthen ongoing studies;
- building roadmaps and action plans to implement future foundation studies; and
- serving as a trusted advisor and forward-thinking leader on forensic science.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
or
Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
This position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 (ZA-3 at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as:
Utilizing forensic science methods and practice such as method validation, statistical analysis of data, legal and courtroom procedures, quality assurance, data analysis, and forensic science standards and protocols
Coordinating and communicating effectively with various stakeholders, to ensure alignment and collaboration on project goals and objectives.
Experience with technical writing and publication in peer reviewed journals related to forensic science research
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
