This is a developmental position and selection may be made at either the GS 9 or GS 11 grade level. See below for additional information.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES APPLICANT TO MEET BOTH EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. NO SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE IS ACCEPTABLE.
Duties
Ensure that soldiers, reservists, authorized civilians, and family members are afforded religious education programs, which allow them to exercise their religious beliefs regardless of faith groups.
As a Director of Religious Education at the full performance level, you will perform the following duties:
Develop specific guidelines and directives for installation-wide implementation of faith groups and religious education programs/services.
Exercise substantial initiative and judgement in establishing and implementing the religious education goals, objectives, and programs.
Advise Chaplain on single to large multiple faith group installation matters of religious education and youth ministry.
Assess resource needs and deficits in order to meet the needs of religious education programming across the installation.
Develop program marketing and advertising for the installation with emphasis on religious education and youth ministry.
Evaluate the installation training plan for religious education and youth ministry personnel to develop a training plan for chaplains, chaplain assistant and civilian personnel.
Requirements
- May be required to work Sundays, evenings and holidays.
- Temporary duty travel (10% or less) away from the normal duty station may be required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This position has a specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. The Religious Education Services GS-1701 occupational series has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions. Education above the high school level must have been completed in a U.S. college, university, or other educational institution that has been accredited by one of the accrediting agencies or associations recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.
For the GS-09:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a major or minor in religious education (or spiritual formation), or a minimum of 18 documented credit hours in the same.
AND
A minimum of 2 years of documented professional experience leading a religion-based education program. This experience is defined as: religious education course and curriculum development and administration, knowledge of multi-faith religious requirements and religious education program awareness and coordination; experience designing spiritual formation venues for children, youth, adults, and intergenerational groups; religious education volunteer teacher/leader training experience; religious volunteer management.
Additional years of documented religion-based education program leadership may be substituted for up to six credits of the academic requirement (at a rate of 1 year of documented professional religious education experience for one religious education academic credit).
For the GS-11:
A Master of Religious Education degree or its equivalent from an accredited graduate school OR a Master's degree of any discipline other than religious education which includes a minimum of 24 documented credits in religious education theory, practice, or spiritual formation.
AND
A minimum 2 years of documented professional experience leading a religious education program.
