This position serves as the Prosthetic Clerk for the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service at the James Haley VA Medical Center and will report directly to the Assistant Chief of Prosthetics. The primary purpose of this position is to support the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service with maintaining medical equipment such as; recording stock, repairing damaged equipment, and diagnosing issues with the equipment.

Duties

Primary duties include: Retrieve durable medical equipment from the Prosthetics Stockroom. Record all furnished equipment in the Prosthetic Stock Issue menu option. Utilize the DHCP system to gather information through the use of the Prosthetic Package, Patient information screens, and the mailman system to communicate the various hospital staff. Receives Prosthetic consults and/or oral instructions outlining the work to be done. Locate worn, damaged, and/or defective equipment through the visual inspection or operation tests. Routinely make on-site adjustments including but not limited to footrests, leg rests, arm pads, anti-tippers, attach oxygen holders, attach cane holders, etc. Operate manual wheelchairs, walkers, and attach necessary accessories. Determine whether repairs can be accomplished using replacement parts or whether the entire piece of equipment should be condemned and make formal adjustments to wheelchairs and walkers and perform operational tests on equipment. Inventories all medical equipment in the Equipment Repair Storage area. Conduct minimally a quarterly inventory of medical equipment stock in compliance with procedures and regulatory requirements. Receives incoming shipment from the local contract vendor. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Prosthetic Clerk/PD06073A Physical Requirements: There is some lifting involved when retrieving prosthetic items from the storage area for issuance to patients. Some climbing in associated with stocking items in storage area. Items to be lifted, in most instances, do not exceed thirty (30) pounds. Wheelchairs may weigh up to seventy (70) pounds, with an average weight of forty (40) pounds. The employee must be able to lift up to (50) pounds. The employee should request assistance when lifting items in excess of forty (50) pounds. Numerous items are required to be packaged and wrapped for mailing and/or shipped. Required to stand on occasion for periods of up to 1 hour; this requirement can be modified. Must be able to push a large hand cart with bulky items from the basement. Can be modified based on employees physical condition.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-04 grade level: One year of general experience (equivalent to the GS-03 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Generalized experience includes: Handling equipment weighing up to several hundred pounds, such as power wheelchairs, scooters, and other similar equipment; Handles conflict and problems in dealing with customers constructively and appropriately Basic typing skills; Comprehends manufacture manuals and instructions Skilled in the common use of hand tools such as; pliers, wrenches, and held hand power drills Providing customer with consistent information according to policies and procedures OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have two years above high school. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
