The New Mexico VA Healthcare System is recruiting for a Program Assistant assigned to the Surgical Care Service. The incumbent will assist the Podiatric medicine Surgery Residency (PMSR), and Optometry Residency Program (ORP) directors in overall management of their respective programs.

Duties

Assist in development and annually updating the Resident Manual as directed by the PMSR Program Director. Collaborate with Human Resources to assure timely process of credentialing paperwork for all incoming and continuing students and/or residents. Assess/direct a wide range of programmatic issues i.e. long range planning, assisting the recruitment process of trainees, developing training projects as assigned by the Program Director, analyzing administrative workflow, maintaining databases, communicating with faculty/ trainees regarding a range of issues and/or managing internal and external program relations. Assist in scheduling activities to include i.e. a well-designed mix of self-directed learning, seminar participation, instructional experiences and scholarship. Organize/prepare meetings and/or distributes materials for conferences and lectures as needed. Develop and create brochures, invitations or advertisements for events or lectures. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Program Assistant (OA)/PD00116O Physical Requirements: Work is performed is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required. Due to the complexity of the work and personal interactions, the multiplicity of project/tasks at any one time, and deadlines, the job may be psychologically stressful at times.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: utilizing automated software to enter and maintain data; organizing and maintaining files and records; screening phone calls to determine the nature and referring to appropriate staff; and providing administrative support to daily operations. This position requires the ability to type at least 40 words per minute. Your response to the typing skill question on the Occupational Questionnaire will be used in your qualification determination. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
