The facility employs full-time, part-time, and consultative physicians while maintaining an active academic affiliation with the University of Central Florida (UCF) School of Medicine. In addition, this facility manages an active clinical research program and provides comprehensive health care services to Veteran residents throughout Central Florida. The person in this position serves as the Patient Service Assistant determining eligibility and entitlements benefits for veterans.
Duties
This position is located within the Health Administration Services (HAS) Department in the office of Enrollment and Eligibility at the Orlando VA Medical Center (OVAMC). The OVAMC currently consists of a medical center, two outpatient clinics, and four community-based outpatient clinics. The scope of services encompasses a comprehensive range of clinical subspecialties.
- Determines eligibility and entitlements for benefits of applicants using various methods
- Conducts interviews with patients who apply for medical benefits
- Advises veterans of their entitlements to various medical benefits and co-payment requirements
- Communicate with the Health Eligibility Center to resolve conflicts relative to eligibility for applicants
- Collects health insurance information from applicants for entry into VistA and scan enrollment ID cards
- Coordinates patient requests for transfers to the Community Based Outpatient Clinics
- Establishes, updates, and maintains office files and records
- Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information and processes in Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) System
- Knowledge of medical center procedures, regulations, physical layout, staff, and functions
- Performs office automation duties using software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail
- Provides clerical support such as answering the telephone, providing information about the office and standard operating procedures
- Maintains appointment calendar, schedules appointments and makes administrative arrangements as required
- Edits documents, maintain reports and reviews correspondence for accuracy
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/29/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
Specialized Experience : You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Patient Service Assistant at the full performance level (GS-6), and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience such as determining eligibility and entitlement for benefits of all applicants using various methods, receiving, and directing telephone calls and greeting customers. Conducting interviews with patients who apply for medical benefits. Preparing correspondence, reports, and other documents based on information gathered from program files or other records. Knowledge of various office automation software, processing procedures, and function keys to produce a wide range of documents. Knowledge of standard office equipment, such as computers, copiers, scanners, fax machines, and office automation systems to perform a substantial range of office automation support. Proper use of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare written material correctly. Note: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week
TYPING PROFICIENCY: In addition to meeting specialized Experience as described above this position requires the skills of a qualified typist. In addition to meeting the experience you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.

Physical Requirements: The work area is usually an adequately lighted, heated and ventilated office of medical facility setting. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions. The position is sedentary and may require some walking, standing, bending, carrying and/or lifting of papers and medical records. Occasionally Veterans may be angry and potentially violent.
