This position is located at the Fleet Readiness Center, Southwest (FRC-SW) in Coronado, CA. This program is a 4-year combination work/study program. This announcement is established to fill vacancies for the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest (FRCSW) Apprentice Program, which begins in October 2023.
Duties
You will receive and perform shop assignments in the rudiments of trade tasks, technical shop subjects, and tools, equipment and materials of the trade.
You will perform very elementary trade tasks under supervision of a shop instructor or artisan.
You will prepare worksites, such as set up scaffolds, ladders, stands, etc.
You will set up the job for the journey level tradesperson with related materials and equipment as designated by the journey level trades person.
You will learn to perform more advanced work of the trade as a means of developing trade skills and gaining knowledge of the trade.
You will pick up all tools and equipment after completion of projects or assignments.
You will properly clean and store all tools and equipment used for projects.
You will keep worksites clean and in an orderly fashion on a daily basis.
You will perform other tasks incidental to the mastery of trade fundamentals. Your trade assignment will be determined by your test scores, your interview and the availability of trades based on our future staffing needs.

- Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You must sign an agreement to work within the Department of Navy for 2 years after completion of the 4-year apprentice program.
- Work requires considerable walking, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, standing, climbing, bending, stretching, pulling, and working in cramped and awkward positions for long periods of time.
- Work requires arduous physical exertion. Work pace may be rapid for extended periods. Heavy exertion may be required at frequent intervals.
- Work is performed indoors as well as outdoors in all kinds of temperature, lighting, and weather conditions, during the day or night. Exposed to windy, hot, cold, and wet conditions associated with land and sea operations.
- Work involves stress of completing repairs and restoring service as quickly and as safely as possible. Work is usually damp, dirty, dusty, and greasy.
- Work requires the ability to regularly lift up to 35 lbs. and may occasionally require the ability to lift over 45 lbs.; however, dollies, hand trucks, cranes, etc. are available.
- Certain trades require handling weights up to 120 lbs. with assistance.
- The Electrician Voyage Repair (2805) trade is EMERGENCY- ESSENTIAL. An E-E employee must sign an agreement (DD2365) stating that they will support the mission requirements. Please see additional information section for details.
Qualifications
Please note: You will be applying for the Apprentice program and not a specific trade. The FRCSW Apprentice program management reserves the right to place you in specific trade.
The FRCSW Apprentice Program will send a survey via email to the first 100 applicants. Applicants will receive email within three weeks after the job announcement closing date.
Applicants must complete the survey by the due date to proceed with the application process.
Applicants who complete the survey will receive an email with information on how to register and take the free ACCUPLACER exam. A computer with a camera (i.e., desktop, laptop or chrome book) is needed to take the online ACCUPLACER exam during the designated testing period.
Applicants must complete and pass the ACCUPLACER exam to proceed with the application process.
Applicants who pass the ACCUPLACER exam will be considered for an interview based on their test scores and resume. Applicants will receive an email two weeks after the testing period end date stating whether they will or will not be considered for an interview.

Basis of Rating: Anyone applying for these positions must take and pass a no-fee written examination with a score of 70% or higher. The written examination will cover all positions and will test for reading comprehension, sentence skills, levels of English proficiency language use, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and college-level mathematics. You will be notified in writing of the day and time you are scheduled to take the test. The written notification of your scheduled testing will also serve as your admission into the testing site.

After successful completion of the ACCUPLACER examination, you will be eligible for a journey level tradespersons interview. If selected, you will be notified by email to start the hiring process and medical examination.
