This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The NT-4 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-11 and GS-12; the NT-5 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-13 and GS-14. You will serve as a Directed Energy (DE) Electro-Mechanical Technician in the Integrated Engagement Systems Department, High Energy Laser Weapon Systems (LWS) Division, LWS Engineering and M&S Branch (Code E16) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.

Duties

You will serve as Lead Electro-Mechanical Technician responsible to install, maintain and repair automated machinery and electro-optical mechanical weapons systems in industrial settings. You will lead a team of technicians in the integration, building, wiring, testing, diagnosing of problems, and modification of system and subsystem components, including high energy lasers and precision optical and tracking components. You will work across departments, academia, and contractors on various tasks in building and testing subsystems related to High Energy Lasers, Optics, Gimbals and Beam Control Systems. You will coordinate and assist in the test and execution of High Energy Laser systems and related optical components, subcomponents and controls. You will manage the logistics of assembling and disassembling hardware at various test locations within and outside of your duty station. You will collaborate with management and engineering teams when adopting new changes to processes. You will mentor and train other technicians and junior engineers, both government and contractor. You will serve as Deputy Facility Manager over Directed Energy (DE) test and assembly lab, including coordinating workflow, safety, and training required to operate this facility and the multiple projects within. You will coordinate the packaging, loading and shipping of DE weapon systems that include accommodations for sensitive optical components and hazardous materials associated with the system. You will provide input to the engineering design of High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems that will enhance the performance, survivability, maintainability and manufacturability.

Requirements

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current forklift certification.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

TO QUALIFY FOR NT-5: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-4 pay band (GS-11 and GS-12 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Applying a comprehensive knowledge of technical electronics methods to provide subject matter expertise for high energy laser weapon systems for maritime defense platforms. TO QUALIFY FOR NT-4: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-3 pay band (GS-9 and GS-10 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Applying a wide range of technical electronics principles to troubleshoot various types of electro-mechanical systems. Education

TO QUALIFY FOR NT-4: Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of study directly related to the position; OR
  • Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of study directly related to the position; OR
  • A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
There are no authorized education substitutions to qualify for this position at the NT-5 level.
