Duties

The United States Space Force (USSF) Space Operations Command (SpOC) 2nd Range Operations Squadron (2 ROPS) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California is searching for an Aerospace Surveillance Officer (NH-0301-03, GS 12/13 equivalent). Description:Space Launch Delta 30 is searching for a qualified candidate to fill an Aerospace Surveillance Officer position. Come join our amazing team! This is an administration and program management position responsible for supporting missile and rocket launches, in addition to overseeing the control of live air traffic in support of Department of Defense missions: military exercises, hypersonic testing, unmanned flight operations, and other launch operations. Primary duties include being responsible for the planning, implementation, and execution of space launch and test programs impacting the National Airspace System. Directly oversees contracted air controllers for safety compliance and performance objectives surrounding test flights or launch airspace. Writing contractual documents that are of acceptable quality with minimal Contract Review Committee (CRC) discrepancies annotated. Familiarity with Notice to Mariner and Notice to Air Mission processes and procedures. Must be organized and able to handle several tasks and priorities from start to finish. This position will analyze products and procedures for compliance with federal laws and installation guidance, as well as act as the go-between for several safety related and aerospace matters. Directs, monitors, and provides a safe environment for aircraft and ships during aeronautical and launch operations using established control systems. - Minimum of five years' military Air Battle Manager (ABM), Weapons Director (WD), or FAA active controlling experience. - Applicant will be required to understand and perform tactical aircraft control such as intercepts, point outs, and air refueling events. - Applicant will actively monitor manned and unmanned aircraft operating throughout the Western Range, safely clearing all launch hazard areas of aircraft and sea vessels. - Applicant will be required to support all DoD tests and/or launch missions, requiring varying degrees of aircraft control and airspace management. - Applicant must possess the skills and the ability to monitor aircraft positioning, altitude, and airspeed while simultaneously coordinating with internal/external agencies. The ideal candidate must have an associate degree (required) or an undergraduate degree in Aerospace or related field (preferred). Must be a graduate of a military service controller school or equivalent. Five years' experience and certification controlling live aircraft and scheduling of air control operations in Military Radar Units, Air Operations Centers, or similar work history is required. Applicant must be knowledgeable of FAA rules, flight safety, range operations, and area clearance procedures. Must be able to act without supervision, perform under stress, as well as operate in a fast-paced digital environment. Candidate will be required (as missions dictate) to work irregular duty hours including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Key Skills and Abilities: 1. Thorough understanding and knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Transportation and Department of Defense regulations and directives, Special Use Airspace operating procedures, National Airspace System management concepts and practices related to space transportation, an understanding of ballistic and orbital mechanics in addition to a wide spectrum of range services and launch and test programs and tenant range user requirements. 2. Ability to independently plan, organize, and direct the program support requirements for aeronautical and launch customers with a focus on aeronautical and launch safety. 3. Ability to communicate effectively, including the ability to brief senior leaders, educate visitors, and advocate to higher management aerospace recommendations in the best interest of flight safety and IAW FAA regulations as the installation subject matter expert. 4. Ability to apply conventional knowledge, experience, and expertise to develop new ways to conduct business while maintaining focus on safety and mission support.5. Ability to supervise highly complex National Airspace System missions.

  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of TDY assignments.
  • May be required to work overtime on an unscheduled or emergency basis.
  • Must have graduated from a US military service or FAA school qualified to designate air controllers or air traffic controllers, with the current ability to perform all controller duties without restriction.
  • This position is designated as a key position IAW AFI 36-507. Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
  • This position is subject to Temporary Duty Assignment (TDY): Approximately 15 days per year.
  • Position will close in 5 business days or 75 applications (whichever comes first).
