The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described by this position may not fully meet the type of work to be performed or there may be work that this position does not do in each of the specialties; however, if the general intent is met then this position is appropriate.

Duties

Position will be providing support to journeyman level trades workers and independently performing advanced Performs repairs to buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs and replaces items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets. Replaces defective siding, steps, windowsills and thresholds; replaces glass panes and damaged portions of concrete or wooden walks and/or steps. Applies premixed paints or stains to masonry, gypsum board or wood surfaces using brushes or rollers. Paints various types of structures such as interior and exterior metal, wood and masonry surfaces, and a variety of wooden trim and new and old cabinets. Performs plumbing tasks such as replacing hose bibs, valves, nipples, unions and elbows, fixtures, toilets, flush valves, faucets, and various types of pipe and copper lines. Cut and thread pipes and winterizes water systems. Performs electrical tasks involving making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures. Patches and repairs roofs consisting of built up tar and paper, metal, as well as foam roofs and asphalt shingles. Mixes, pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing. In repairing damaged areas, removes broken concrete and prepares sub surfaces. Must possess a working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, drywall, ceramic tile and concrete systems. The incumbent computes curves, arcs, tangents, and possess advanced knowledge of carpentry skills utilizing accepted trade methods and techniques. Incumbent must have the ability to read, interpret and apply building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches, working drawings and building codes. AREA INFORMATION Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. The park is among the top 10% of most visited national park units annually; it is within 3 hours of 30 million people, includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, several historic districts, and over 50 miles of trails through forest, dune, wetland, and prairie ecosystems. The park is the birthplace of the science of ecology, has some of the most diverse plant and avian communities in the National Park Service, and hosts an array of exceptional cultural resources, for example the 1933 World's Fair Century of Progress homes. Small towns and vacation communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan, along with industrial corridors and farmlands, interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands, surround the park. All services are available in the communities, including schools, colleges, shopping, and other major amenities. The area has weather typical of the Midwest with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.Knowledge of materialsTechnical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments SCREEN OUT MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience must be demonstrated in at least two of the following trades: Carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, etc.); Painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces); Plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.); Roofing (repairs and patching, tar and paper, metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles); Electrical (repairs including removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures; Cement Finishing (building and setting forms for sidewalks and steps, mixes pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing; Masonry (maintenance, measures, determines amount of concrete, sets forms, pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project specifications); Wastewater Plant Operator (monitoring equipment and gauges, performing routine tests, recording the results in reports, collecting samples, adjusting the rate of flow and amounts of chemicals to be used; Water Plant Operator (monitoring pumping equipment, regulating water, reading meters gauges and charts, recording readings and preparing reports).
