The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. All of the duties described by this position may not exist in each location, but that should not preclude use of this position.

Duties

In this position, the incumbent will use their journeyman level of knowledge and skill in several trades and crafts. These major duties fall in the area of Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Electrical work, along with Equipment Operation. Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Constructs storage areas, workrooms, and offices within existing buildings including framework, rafters, joists, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, and flooring. Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures. Constructs interior and exterior stairs. Installs exterior siding and roofing. Installs interior and exterior trim materials. Constructs and installs cabinets and builds countertops utilizing formica or wood. Installs floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet. Matches or creates exact reproductions of various components of historic buildings and fixtures. Plans, computes, and lays out projects and identifies material needs. Works from complex instructions, blueprints, sketches and building codes. Operates various carpentry equipment and tools (e.g., routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses, etc.) and is able to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. Also operates various power and hand tools such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, power activated nail guns, combustion type saws, etc. Cuts bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints and applies plastic laminates to wood and other surfaces on counter tops, cabinets, desk tops, and tables. Indiana Dunes National Park is a 15,000-acre park located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan, approximately 45 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois. The park is among the top 10% of most visited national park units annually; it is within 3 hours of 30 million people, includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan's southern shoreline, several historic districts, and over 50 miles of trails through forest, dune, wetland, and prairie ecosystems. The park is the birthplace of the science of ecology, has some of the most diverse plant and avian communities in the National Park Service, and hosts an array of exceptional cultural resources, for example the 1933 World's Fair Century of Progress homes. Small towns and vacation communities on the beaches of Lake Michigan, along with industrial corridors and farmlands, interspersed with large tracts of woodlands and wetlands, surround the park. All services are available in the communities, including schools, colleges, shopping, and other major amenities. The area has weather typical of the Midwest with temperatures normally ranging from 0 degrees in the winter to 90 degrees in the summer. Performed at this level in two of the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing.
