This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation.
Duties
Operates an ultrasound scanning system, including control console, multi-image display, cutaneous transducers and endocavitary transducers to produce images.
Confers with radiologists to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations and determines technical factors, and positioning to satisfy the requirements.
Exams include scans to abdomen, gallbladder, liver, kidneys, appendix, thyroid, aorta, scrotum, hernias, soft tissues, pediatric studies, duplex studies of the upper and lower extremities, and duplex of the liver.
Duties may also include assisting staff radiologist or OB/Gyn in sonohysterogram; fine needle aspiration and/or biopsy, or percutaneous abscess drainage, examination of liver and renal transplants, and intra-operative ultrasound.
Utilizes the Radiology Department computer system to schedule patients for examinations.
Performs other ultrasound related duties to include reception and scheduling as assigned by the Radiologist or ultrasound supervisor.
Maintains daily and weekly logs of quality assurance tests.
Responsible for the indoctrination and training of selected personnel in ultrasound technology.
Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Lifting up to 45 pounds may be required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Registration as a Registered Ultrasound Technologist (RDMS) and certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) required.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Employee may be required to travel a few days per month.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing a variety of ultrasound examinations of human patients; setting up the exam room or performing portable ultrasound examinations; and educating patients or staff. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08)

Education: 2 years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Sonography.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
