The primary purpose of this position, Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist, GS-1035-12, is to serve as a first level supervisor, providing planning, directing, organizing, and exercising control over nonsupervisory employees assigned to a major command or unified combat command Public Affairs division/directorate
Duties
-Plan, organize, and direct the activities of the Public Affairs division/ directorate, ensuring that Public Affairs activities comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meet customer needs.
-Exercise supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
-Represent the organization with a variety of councils, boards, working groups, and panels inside and outside the agency.
-Serve as senior adviser for Public Affairs.

- May be required to escort new media representatives to a forward operating location in the event of a deployment or other operations.
- SECURITY CLEARANCE: INCUMBENT MUST BE ABLE TO OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN AN APPROPRIATE LEVEL SECURITY CLEARANCE AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.
- Selectee may be required to serve a probationary or trial period.
- A 1 year supervisory probationary period is required if not previously met.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Support Positions

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience at a level close to the work of this position that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform. Typically, we would find this experience in work within this field that is closely related. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11), pay band or equivalent. Specialized experience is described as assisting with planning, designing, initiating, executing, evaluating, and amending programs, projects, activities, and other major program functions/resolving problems; and/or helps to research, interpret, analyze and apply appropriate Public Affairs instructions, directives, and guidance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of communication concepts, principles, policies, practices, methods, applications, techniques, standards, and trends applicable to researching, planning, developing, coordinating, leading, and evaluating broad Public Affairs and visual information programs and requirements, strategies, and assets to perform the mission.
Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of the methods, concepts, and techniques to develop, research, analyze, and evaluate written materials and visual information products to effectively prepare communication products on matters of importance while representing a wide variety of organizations and viewpoints.
Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions and mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
*PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is primarily sedentary. Some walking and standing may occur during a normal workday in connection with travel to and from meetings and conferences. May carry light items, such as reports, data products, and notebooks. No special physical ability is required.
*WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office setting and includes an array of risks and discomforts normally found in offices and conference rooms as well as with standard safety precautions. Much of the work is done using desk-top computers.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
