You will serve as a LEAD ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the ELECTRICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will serve as a Lead Engineering Technician in mechanical standards and test equipment, Test and Measurement Systems (TAMS), General Purpose Test Equipment (GPTE), and Special Support Equipment (SSE) in the Metrology and Calibration Laboratory. You will maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that come up. You will perform calibration interval analysis in accordance with established procedures on test equipment and tools used to support Naval Nuclear work at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. You will make recommendations to both Reference Standards Laboratory (RSL) and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard shops with respect to handling and processing of nuclear and non-nuclear mechanical measurement and calibration tools. You will develop and authorize corrective actions within the laboratory and forwards change recommendations to the Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) technical authority for dissemination Navy wide

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience leading by planning and executing assignments, determining the best method/technique required to resolve mechanical calibration problems. Experience evaluating data and determining acceptability of equipment modifications, validity, test procedures and data, or legality of operation as well as developing new or modified engineering systems. Experience investigative activities a business conducts in applying the results of scientific and/or engineering research to improve existing products, procedures, or services or to lead to the development of new products, procedures, or services. Experience preparing engineering reports, technical correspondence, and communicate orally as well as using job-relevant information systems and/or software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, automated research tools, and database applications. Experience conveying findings in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience persuasively and uses effective modes to reinforce message retention.
