This position functions as an independent Principal Investigator and Team Leader of an original research program investigating the methodologies of cellular signaling and metabolic diseases of aging as the relate to geriatrics and gerontology.
Duties
Conduct original investigations related to involvement of cardiolipin metabolism in the pathophysiology, complications and treatment of metabolic diseases of aging, cellular disease mechanisms and signal transduction research.
Participates in qualitative data collection and analysis. and is the principal investigator of a currently funded research program. (NIH and/or VA at he Merit Review Program level or equivalent. Oversees and implements the scientific investigations conducted by staff. Evaluates results of research and assesses potential impact on VHA practice and policy.
Prepare and submit grant proposals for funding of research projects and/or field studies.
Lead team of staff in diverse research at all levels, coordinate research program function in a cost effective efficient and productive manner.
Attain and maintain GRECC Research funding and performance measures.
Serve, at times as a collaborative investigator and at other times as an independent investigator.
Sets overall objectives and identifies the resources available.
Make clear and convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program or project area.
Establishes a systematic course of action for self to ensure accomplishment of specific scientific objectives.
Sets priorities, goals and timetables to achieve maximum productivity leading to funding.
Build a logical approach and performs complex analytical tasks and interprets results that leads to a successful research program.
Coordinate and conduct educational activities on topics relevant to the area of specialty.
Utilize influence and motivation techniques to advise on appropriate methods and approaches and to interpret, apply and recommend improvements to policies and review methods.
Oversees, leads and implements the scientific investigations conducted by staff. Evaluates results of research and assesses potential impact on VHA practice and policy.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/06/2025.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of theories, principles, concepts, and methodologies of gerontology based research; ability to perform complex analytical studies and interpretation of results to coordinate the evaluation of programs / research projects; ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make clear, convincing presentations, explain and justify recommendations; provide direction and guidance on critical and complex issues; develop new methods, approaches, and procedures in the coordination or research projects including clinical studies.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
