You will serve as a Transportation Assistant (Freight) in the Supply Management Department of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR SAN DIEGO.

Duties

You will be charged with identifying the mode(s) of transportation, necessary special equipment and services required for shipments, securing carriers, and advising customers on transportation issues. You will manage shipment solutions effecting off-station shipping of general freight, hazardous, Arms, Ammunition, and Explosives, classified, high dollar value, fragile, security-risk aviation and ship materials, using all modes of transportation. You will make informed decisions based on cost analysis to be determined by material characteristics/classification, dimensions and weight, urgency of need, and customer mission requirements. You will serve as a freight/SPE shipping technical consultant and advisor, providing technical advice and administration of all customer shipments. You will review shipping requests for accuracy, communicate with the customer when needed, make corrections, and forward shipping request to the Regional Transportation Office.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • This position is considered Key/Non-Combat Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support of the expeditionary requirements in other than combat or combat support situations.

Qualifications

Your resume must have one year of Transportation Assistant (Freight) specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector applying a practical knowledge of the carrier industry, terminal and storage capabilities in support of transportation, necessary special equipment and services required for shipments, carriers, and customers on transportation issues (i.e. general freight and hazmat). I have experience identifying modes of transportation, necessary special equipment and services required for shipments, securing carries, and advising customers on transportation issues. Examples of specialized experience include the following: 1) Analyzing material dimensions and weight to determine specific handling, packing, loading, or type of carrier equipment required; 2 )Analyzing, comprehending, and applying freight transportation rules and regulations when determining the most appropriate mode of shipment and storage capabilities; 3) Communicating with customers to obtain their shipment needs and services desired; and 4) Preparing maintaining various files such as bills of lading, invoice and shipping documents, etc. Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=List-by-Occupational-Series Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).
