This WG-07 Maintenance Worker (Irrigation) position will be part of the Maintenance Division team, located at Zion National Park.
This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position. Career-Seasonal positions include all the benefits of permanent employment, but do not provide employment on a year-round basis. This position will be in non-pay up to one pay period per year, scheduled sometime from early to late January annually.
Duties
This position is located in the Buildings and Utilities section of Facility Management at Zion National Park, under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisory (Grounds, Water, and Sewer). The incumbent performs a variety of tasks associated with irrigation and culinary water systems. The incumbent functions as a team member and must maintain productive communication with all park divisions in the performance of their duties.
Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of trees, lawns, and vegetation in developed area, which includes campgrounds, employee housing, and around visitor use buildings.
Uses primary and secondary ditches and head gates to regulate flow to ensure efficient flow and coverage.
Maintenance and upkeep of pressurized irrigation systems, pressurizing and winterizing as needed.
Seasonal gardening tasks.
Operates tractor in pulling mowers, plows, discs, and ditch digging/clearing equipment.
Assists the plumber in the maintenance and repair of utility, supply, and disposal systems.
Serves as a back-up worker leader for the grounds and custodial staff.
Physical Demands: Participates in activities which require lifting up to 100-pound loads, performs manual labor as needed with a shovel, pick, and rake. Climbs up and down ladders carrying pruning equipment, walking on rough terrain, and in irrigated fields. Extensive stooping and bending. Operates a chainsaw to clean brush along irrigation ditches and assists in hazard tree work in campgrounds and around facilities.
Working Conditions: Majority of work is performed outdoors with exposure to a variety of pollens and insects. Summertime temperatures may exceed 110 degrees, while wintertime temperatures may be as low as 0 degrees. Terraine around irrigation ditches is uneven and steep in areas with wet and slippery surfaces possible.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT).
Maintenance Workers at this level perform maintenance worker duties associated with more than one trade such as:
rough carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, concrete forms, etc.);
plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, testing and repair of backflow systems, etc.);
masonry (maintenance, repair and construction of sites built of stone, mortar; measures, determines amount of concrete, sets forms, pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project specifications);
painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces);
Will also possess the ability to use a computer, maintain records, and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (including blueprint reading) & Use of measuring instruments.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
Knowledge of materials.
