This WG-4749-07 Maintenance Worker (Trails) position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. This is a permanent, full-time, Career-Seasonal position, subject to non-pay up to 2 pay periods each year, scheduled between early and late January. Seasonal appointments include the same benefits as year-round Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

Duties

This WG-4749-07 Maintenance Worker (Trails) position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. The purpose of this position is to perform at the sub-journeyman level, the maintenance, repair, and construction of Park trails. Major duties will include: Masonry & Carpentry. As a trail worker, demonstrates a complete knowledge of trail maintenance techniques, and is able to recognize and address trail maintenance problems. Incumbent must possess a strong knowledge of masonry tasks including the maintenance, repair and construction of a variety of walls, bridge abutments, causeways, rip-rap trail tread and other structures built of a variety of stone using dry and wet masonry techniques; must possess a strong knowledge of timber carpentry skills involved with the use of chain saws and cross cut saws to fall, buck, notch and shape both native and dimensional lumber; must possess a strong knowledge of trail maintenance operations, such as trail tread and drainage maintenance, trail corridor maintenance, etc. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel extensively; and/or Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools. Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 13,000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in an around rockslide areas, working around stock, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

The ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision for the Maintenance Worker (Trails) WG-4749-7 position (SCREEN OUT). Examples of qualifying experience may include: Work as a maintenance worker performing trail construction and maintenance projects such as water bars, rock steps, retaining walls, drainage structures, rip-rap tread, bridges, and signs; Knowledge of carpentry, masonry, trail condition assessment, use of hand tools, and equipment operation in a trail maintenance and construction capacity; lead other trail workers on backcountry and front country trails or worked on a professional trail crew (i.e., NPS, U.S. Forest Service, Private Trail Crew, Conservation Corps, etc.); Instructed, or assisted in the instruction of, peers in trail and trail equipment maintenance, and the proper and safe use of tools and equipment. 2. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints). 3. Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. 4. Knowledge of Materials. 5.
