About the Position: Serves as supervisor of the Health Technicians in the Ophthalmology Service, which provides inpatient and outpatient medical care services to military personnel, retirees, and their dependents. Functions of the service include examination, diagnosis and treatment of injuries and disorders of the eye by surgical and medical means. Performs technical work of a medical nature subordinate to doctors in the Ophthalmology Service.
Duties
Perform optometric/ophthalmic screenings.
Operate ophthalmic imaging taking intraocular color photographs and using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.
Assist with ophthalmic clinic laser/surgical procedures.
Coordinate, manage, train and supervise day-to-day activities of the ophthalmic clinic technicians.
Manage property and inventory for the ophthalmology clinic.
Maintain civilian time and attendance of the ophthalmology clinic technicians.
Coordinate maintenance of existing equipment and facilitating purchase of new equipment.
Perform formal visual field testing.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position may have specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties may require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position may require the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.

- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Position may be designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position may require the incumbent to complete a one-year supervisory probationary period.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) measuring a patient's vision, eye pressure, eye muscle function, muscle movement, and pupil reactions; 2) assisting during eye procedures and surgery; and 3) recording a patient's color and scope of vision. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as optometry or ophthalmology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours of graduate education beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
