You will serve as a Training Instructor in the Mariner Skills Training Center Pacific (MSTCPAC) of SURFACE WARFARE OFFICERS SCHOOL.

Duties

You will instruct staff and students on all facets of Navigation, Seamanship, and Ship handling (NSS), Bridge Resource Management (BRM), RADAR Fundamentals, Automated RADAR Plotting Aid (ARPA), and Leadership. You will operate Ship handling simulators and other computer-based training systems as training tools, simultaneous with the provisions of instruction and competency assessment. You will provide instructor led classroom training regarding bridge watchstander duties based on SWOS provided curriculum, and in accordance with the NSS Training Requirements Document (TRD) and applicable Train-to-Qualify (T2Q) program. You will review policy decision and safety investigations/mishap reports affecting Navigation, Seamanship, and Ship handling for applicability, incorporate pertinent information into current course content, and brief instructors on revised content. You will define and establish instructional and student performance requirements and standards in alignment with Fleet Skill Objects, Human Capital Objects, and Navy Mission Essential Task Lists (NMETLS).

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is primarily sedentary, requires some physical exertion including standing for extended periods of time to lecture/train students with appropriate number of breaks, as determined by instructor, to maintain instructor and student focus.
  • Work is primarily performed with in properly heated and ventilated, and well-lighted office or classroom setting.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Providing training/instruction in ship navigation systems, seamanship and ship handling principles and procedures; 2) Developing curriculum/training material to support instruction in navigation, seamanship and ship handling; 3) Utilizing ship handling simulators (bridge simulators, Conning Officer Virtual Environment (COVE) simulators) to advance seamanship skills; and 4) Evaluating performance of student/trainees to determine effectiveness of instruction and training material.
