You will serve as the Principal Scientist for Maritime Synthetic Aperture Radar, a Senior Scientific Technical Manager (SSTM) position, located in the Remote Sensing Division at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory located in Washington DC.
Duties
You will serve as the technical lead in identifying and developing new research directions in remote sensing of importance to the Navy, DoD and other government and international partners.
You will develop cross-organizational teams to address the research problems, and identify and secure funding from sponsors for this research.
You will conduct and lead innovative research advancing remote sensing strategies and techniques to leverage existing government and commercial systems critical to future naval power.
You will extend current capabilities through development of advanced signal processing techniques for emerging and future remote sensing system strategies and capabilities.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to complete ethics orientation within three months of appointment and submit a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450, within 30 days of appointment.
Qualifications
The applicant is to provide a separate narrative statement which describes fully, but concisely, how his/her experience supports each of the following Mandatory Technical Qualifications. Each technical qualification narrative should not exceed 2 pages. Failure to address these specific qualifications in a separate narrative statement will eliminate you from consideration:
1.Demonstrated competence in understanding, planning, and conducting research on the impact of mesoscale oceanography and ocean dynamics on radar and electro-optical remote sensing technologies.
2. Demonstrated research spanning physical oceanography, target detection and characterization, atmospheric phenomena (even for microware synthetic-aperture radar (SAR)) and derived inferences.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop cross-organizational teams to address the research problems, and identify and secure funding from sponsors for this research.

Education
Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
An advanced degree of Master's or Ph.D. in one of the educational fields listed above is highly desirable.
