Duties

You will be responsible for the science and technology research programs, business management, and personnel leadership of the section. You will provide scientific and technical leadership and guidance to the Laser Physics section. You will lead experiments in advanced radiation, acceleration, and directed energy. You will plan and supervise experimental research programs. You will critically analyze scientific results and relevance to the overall goals of the sponsoring agencies.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or NP-03 pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional physicist performing all or most of the following duties: 1.) Leading experiments in the interactions of intense laser beams, plasmas, and matter, advanced radiation sources, and directed energy; 2.) Critically analyzing scientific results and relevance to the overall goals of the Section; 3.) Performing individual and collaborative experimental, computational, and theoretical research; 4.) Supervising experimental research programs; 5) developing and resourcing new scientific research programs, and 5.) Attending and presenting work at scientific meetings. This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: This position requires demonstrated experience in the use of short and ultra-short pulse laser technology for experiments on nonlinear propagation in air, water, and other media, characterization of nonlinear materials, and diagnostics of ultra-fast optical phenomena. Education

Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
