Duties

Execute on-site decisions to resolve issues, identify hazards and implement corrective actions as appropriate. Interact with various agency representatives to provide assistance in resolving range related conflicts. Provide oversight on regulatory requirements pertaining to unit operations on the Range. Utilize the Daily Range Schedule to review, monitor and analyze access to ranges through on-site inspections on the range/training area complexes. Ensure daily range and training area utilization data is entered into the Range Facility Management Scheduling System (RFMSS). Receive and transmit pertinent safety information for routine situations to the Range Officer, or representative. Manage the safe and coordinated use of the Fort Riley Maneuver, Training and Range Area Complexes. Provide advice on possible problems and instruction in the procedures to follow should such problems arise.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a State of Kansas driver's license.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government motor vehicle operator's identification card (OF 346) within 30 days after hire.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain equipment operator's qualification record (DA 348) with 30 days after hire.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete Accident Avoidance training; receive and maintain card with issue/renewal dates within 30 days after hire.
  • Pre-placement physical exam may be required due to the physical demands required of the position.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position may require overtime work.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience which includes work that involves 1) Inspecting training facilities prior to use ensuring safety standards are met 2) monitoring range and training exercises for safety and environmental compliance; and 3) providing advisories and assistance to personnel utilizing live-fire range and training areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Occupational Safety and Health. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
