Duties

Serve under the general supervision of the Supervisory Fire Inspector (Captain), who makes assignments based on the overall policy and general content of the fire prevention program. Operate within an assigned inspection area to include high-risk, conducting comprehensive fire/safety inspections to identify and correct hazardous conditions. Identify complex unique hazards and devises corrective measures. Conduct public education classes post-wide as well as on-the-job training classes for fire department personnel. Provide training in general fire/safety subjects as well as issues unique to a particular activity. Conduct review of architectural drawings and specifications to determine compliance with fire/safety regulations and evaluates special features impacting the fire protection mission. Respond to emergency incidents as part of a firefighting team, performs a full range of firefighting duties at all types of emergency incidents, maintaining a degree of firefighting proficiency sufficient to perform firefighting tasks.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test
  • This position requires maintaining all physical fitness requirements and satisfactorily passing a physical performance test, periodically.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain, for the duration of employment in this position, a valid Government Driver's License.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall/emergency situations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position is subject to recall after normal tour in cases of emergencies. The normal tour of duty is 60 hours per week and the incumbent will be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief/Commander.
  • Incumbent may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime, subject to recall to duty.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) conducting fire/safety inspections to identify and correct hazardous conditions; 2) developing materials to provide situational and classroom training on fire prevention; 3) reviewing plans for new construction, alterations and/or modifications to buildings and structures assuring compliance with fire codes and fire prevention practices. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). AND Selective Placement Factor: The GS-08 position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, IFSA, or Pro-Board certifications: Firefighter I Certification Firefighter II Certification Fire Instructor I Certification Fire Inspector I Certification Fire Inspector II Certification Hazardous Materials Operations Certification Airport Firefighter Certification AND This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a New York State First Responder, or equivalent, or higher, certification such as New York State Emergency Medical Technician, National Registered Emergency Medical Technician, or Pro Board Emergency Medical Technician.
