Duties
Responsible for providing immediate direction of department fire prevention and inspection operations and carrying out policies and instructions of the Fire Chief in regard to fire prevention and inspection.
Prepare facility inspection and testing inspection schedules for all buildings, facilities, fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, hydrants and water systems, detector systems that are tested by fire prevention and suppression personnel.
Assure maintenance of inspection and test files and direct follow-up inspections as necessary.
Determine training needs for personnel assigned to the Fire Prevention and Protection Division.
Perform supervisory duties such as maintaining time and attendance records; approving leave; advising, counseling, and instructing employees on work and administrative matters; interview candidates; hear and resolve employee complaints or grievances.
At times, serve as the Assistance Chief in charge of firefighting and hazardous materials containment activities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position's normal tour of duty is 60 hours per week and requires the incumbent to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- This position is subject to re-call status in emergency situations.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

INTERNAL APPLICANTS: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Conducting inspections of fire protection and prevention systems. 2) Carrying out analyses of fire suppression and prevention training results in order to determine additional needs for training. 3) Coordinating public education briefings and demonstrations for installation personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
EXTERNAL APPLICANTS: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Developing a fire protection and prevention program according to the needs of the personnel to be trained. 2) Incorporating new requirements and techniques into established fire prevention programs. 3) Maintaining up to date records of inspections for facilities and buildings in the area of responsibility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).
