Duties

Serves as the Assistant Fire Chief in charge of the Emergency Operations Branch. Serves as a senior administrative staff member sharing in the overall management of the division with the Fire Chief. Assumes operational control at emergency incidents directing firefighting crews until relieved by the Deputy Fire Chief and/or the Fire Chief. Directs operational activities for three fire stations including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities. Oversees master operational roster and schedules, administered by the Captain’s, to assure adequate personnel and staff coverage during each shift. Participates in committees, working groups, and task forces with installation personnel. Acts as Deputy Fire Chief during scheduled and unscheduled absences assuming full organizational control.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent will successfully complete an initial program of classroom or on-the-job training covering hazardous waste management as well as annual renewal training.
  • During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Employee must remain clean-shaven to ensure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
  • The incumbent will work a minimum of a 72 hour week.
  • Incumbent is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week unless TDY or on leave.
  • Supervisory probationary period of 1 year.

This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain all of the following Department of Defense, IFSAC or Pro-Board certifications: Fire Officer III Fire Inspector II Hazardous Material Operations Incident Command and Technician Level Airport Firefighter Fire Instructor II New York State Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (or equivalent or higher) certification such as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician -Basic (NREMT-B) certification You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: AccountabilityEmergency CommunicationManaging Human ResourcesOral Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
