About the Position: Serves as a technical editor for the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE), Borden Institute, located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Duties

Discuss edited drafts with authors to explain suggested changes in content or format. Tactfully explain reasons for any needed changes to authors to secure their cooperation. Review manuscripts to assure consistency, and understand and apply necessary copyright laws and permissions, and analyze conclusions to ensure they are consistent with the facts presented. Edit written material for use at national and international medical and scientific meetings in support of the broad mission of the Borden Institute. Determine and recommend advisability of reorganization, condensation or deletion, and rewriting to clarify confusing passages, and adjust stylistic and logical approaches, refine research methods, and select appropriate information to present. Ensure compliance of reprinted material with copyright law and respond to problems or inquiries relating to assigned manuscripts or policy interpretation. Edit entire textbooks with an average of 25 chapters on different subjects, as well as visual technical information including tables and figures.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: GS-11 One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing technical writing and editing of textbooks regarding medical related fields; 2) Ensuring compliance of reprinted material is in accordance with copyright laws; 3) Ensuring writing projects utilize the best writing approach; AND 4) Assisting with creating chapters in accordance with the American Medical Association style and Medical Research Institutions such as: the Borden Institute.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree which includes a total of 15 semester hours in applicable scientific, technical, or social science field(s) of study, and at least one course above the introductory level in the medical field(s). For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages Specialized Experience GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Performing as the authority on technical writing, editing, and publishing policies and practices regarding medical related fields; 2) Ensuring compliance of reprinted material with copyright laws; 3) Analyzing writing projects to determine the best writing approach; 4) Developing chapters in accordance with the American Medical Association style and Medical Research Institutions such as: the Borden Institute; AND 5) Performing substantive editing of medical textbook manuscripts.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
