The Maintenance Division, Aircraft Maintenance Branch at the Armstrong Flight Research Center is seeking a skilled individual to support research projects entailing the development and implementation of extensive research modifications. These modifications include troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, installation, testing and evaluation of complex research aircraft systems and their interface to the basic research aircraft platform.
Duties
Originate mechanical designs to implement experimental installations. Evaluate design changes and modifications to on-board systems, and devise or approve test procedures to determine operational suitability of systems.
Determine the structural integrity and adequacy of the aircraft within the design and/or maximum safe flight envelope. Determine specification compliance and mission suitability for assigned experiments aboard the aircraft.
Make recommendations for resolutions to modifications to accommodate research requirements without affecting the air worthiness of the aircraft.
Advise inspectors on which assemblies or systems have been fabricated or modified, and the results expected from these extensive modifications or fabrications.
Participate with the crew chief in studying pending modifications or installations to determine necessity for repositioning or removing existing equipment, lines or tubes, or modification of mounts and braces to accommodate flight research systems.
Recommend where to install experimental components, assemblies, or system for operational compatibility with other systems.
Assemble and test components to assure research requirements are achieved. Make final acceptance/rejection recommendations after resolving problem areas and negotiating required modifications.
Responsible for carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with the safety, health, and environmental policies set forth by the supervisor. Report hazardous situations and close calls.

Qualifications
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service:
Assisting with performing the removal and installation of engines, flight control, landing gear, fuel systems, and/or hydraulic systems and sub systems;
Assisting with performing preventive and corrective maintenance, inspecting and analyzing physical conditions of components to ensure that all equipment is in reliable, operational, and flight worthy condition;
Working with other technicians, engineers, and managers to resolve aircraft maintenance anomalies and make recommendations on resolution of the issue(s).
