This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This a Maintenance Worker position that performs a variety of building a range operation tasks at Fort Johnson, LA.

Duties

Constructs items from wood where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product. Sets up power saws, drill presses, etc., for various cutting, shaping and drilling. Paints signs, targets, markers and structures by using standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying by coating materials that are prepared to specific directions. Cuts brush, tree limbs and grass to clear lanes of fire by utilizing mowing machines, tractors with bush hogs, and/or other tools and equipment as required. Operates a motor vehicle with trailer to transport materials to and from ranges on installation and public roads,

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a Tier 1 background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
• This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
• This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination to determine the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
• This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision PHYSICAL EFFORT Must have full use of both hands, arms and legs. Makes repairs in hard-to-get places. Work requires prolonged standing, bending, stooping and stretching. Work requires uncomfortable and tiring positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing 60-100 pounds or more with assistance. Must maintain fitness to walk covering distances up to 8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in shop and on ranges with exposure to rain, heat, cold, dirt, dust, grease, noise, odor, smoke and fumes. Work is subject to rotational shifts, as required, to provide 24 hour range support during training exercises. Worker is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters, chips and sawdust. Incumbent is also subject to electrical shock and burns when using electrical equipment or performing maintenance.
