About the Position: Incumbent must have necessary knowledge of construction to fabricate, install and repair targets, target frames, target pits, shelves, firing line markers, foxhole covers and target coffins; and to fit, nail bolt or screw sections according to drawings and specifications where close tolerances are not generally required. Skill to read and understand specific drawings and specifications to construct targets and/or make repairs to portable buildings and other similar items.

Duties

Selects materials required and transports them to shop or work site. Operates a motor vehicle with trailer to transport materials to and from ranges on installation and public roads. Cuts brush, tree limbs and grass to clear lanes of fire by utilizing mowing machines, tractors with bush hogs, and/or other tools and equipment as required. Paints signs, targets, markers and structures by using standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling and spraying by coating materials that are prepared to specific directions. Sets up power saws, drill presses, etc., for various cutting, shaping and drilling. Constructs items from wood where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination to determine the required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Makes repairs in hard to get places. Work requires prolonged standing, bending, stooping and stretching. Work requires uncomfortable and tiring positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing 60-100 pounds or more with assistance. Must maintain fitness to walk covering distances up to 8 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in shop and on ranges with exposure to rain, heat, cold, dirt, dust, grease, noise, odor, smoke and fumes. Work is subject to rotational shifts, as required, to provide 24 hour range support during training exercises. Worker is subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters, chips and sawdust. Incumbent is also subject to electrical shock and burns when using electrical equipment or performing maintenance.
