About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency, Puget Sound Market, Army Medical Center Madigan, Department of Primary Care, Optometry Service located at Tacoma, Washington.

Duties
Obtain health information from patient and/or family to identify major complaints, symptoms, or reasons for seeking healthcare in optometry and screen patients with optometric screening equipment.
Program and operate Corneal Topography System for patient testing.
Conduct test using manual or automatic Optometry equipment.
Order and receive military prescription eyewear.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment
- Position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
- Position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- Position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- Position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- Position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
- Moderate to heavy lifting of 15 lbs.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. To qualify for the GS-05:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience assisting in the evaluation of patients to include interviewing patients and obtaining medical history to assist in the treatment of patients and documenting pertinent patient information into electronic medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Health Technician or Health Technician (Optometry).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
To qualify for the GS-06:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience assisting in the evaluation of patients to include interviewing optometry and/or ophthalmology patients, obtaining medical and ocular history, documenting pertinent patient information into electronic medical records, performing visual acuity testing, fitting and ordering of spectacles, and using specialized ophthalmic equipment to aide in the treatment of optometry patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
