You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the Radiation Health Division (Code 105.5), Radiological Control Office (Code 105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will plan, direct, evaluate, and write procedures to accomplish the personnel exposure control program. You will design, develop, implement, and maintain complex dosimetry processing instrumentation and associated software and procedures for routine and unusual dosimetry occurrences. You will investigate, resolve, document, and review circumstances surrounding unusual dosimetry occurrences. You will develop and maintain a database to track unusual dosimetry occurrences and evaluate and interpret trends associated with them. You will design, develop, implement, and maintain complex analysis instrumentation and associated software and procedures for various types of routine and unusual radioactivity analyses. You will compile and examine analysis data to determine trends and demonstrate equipment performance consistency.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to lift and/or carry loads/items up to 60 pounds in weight.

Qualifications

GS-09 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience implementing knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines to perform in each of the functional areas. Experience applying the functions of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Controls Office, and Radiation Health Division. Experience using the operating principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems. Experience applying the theories, principles, standards, and applications of health physics and radiological controls. This must also include knowledge of associated disciplines such as: mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology. Experience applying the theories, principles, technical applications of radiation dosimetry, radioactivity analysis, environmental monitory, radiation safety, and emergency response and the ability to adapt this knowledge to a complex industrial radiation health program. Experience scheduling appointments, referring patients to the appropriate facilities, and compiling and submitting data on patients to facilitate the performance of radiation physicals. Experience assembling medical records, laboratory tests, and examination results and extracting pertinent information from these results to complete necessary forms and logs. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience implementing knowledge of Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines to perform in each of the functional areas. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

or

2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.


In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-09

  • 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
  • A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience

GS-7:

  • Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education; or
  • Successful completion of a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement; or
  • A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience
