You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the Radiation Health Division (Code 105.5) in the Radiological Control Office (Code 105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will design, develop, implement, and maintain complex dosimetry processing instrumentation and associated software for various types of routine and unusual dosimetry occurrences. You will provide direction, oversight, troubleshooting, and technical assistance for all instrumentation use and problem resolution. You will develop software that interfaces with dosimetry processing equipment and perform complex functions and calculations. You will conduct research and development projects in conjunction with the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) on new dosimetry technologies. You will compile and examine analysis data to determine trends and demonstrates equipment performance consistency. You will perform quality assurance test to ensure results are accurate and precise, and prepare reports on these tests.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying theories, principles, standards, and applications of health physics and radiological controls; including mathematics, statistics, physics, nuclear physics, chemistry, and biology. Experience applying the theories, principles, technical applications of radiation dosimetry, radioactivity analysis, environmental monitoring, radiation safety, and emergency response and the ability to adapt this knowledge to a complex industrial radiation health program. Experience utilizing procedures for scheduling appointments, referring patients to the appropriate facilities, and compiling and submitting data on patients to facilitate the performance of radiation physicals; including procedures for assembling medical records, laboratory tests, and examination results and extracting pertinent information from these results to complete necessary forms and logs. GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulations, NAVSEA policies and procedures, BUMED policies and procedures, Federal regulations, State regulations, shipyard regulations, and applicable technical manuals sufficient to adapt or extrapolate pertinent guidelines to perform in each of the functional areas. Experience understanding the functions and objectives of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, Radiological Controls Office, and Radiation Health Division. Experience operating principles of naval nuclear reactors and reactor systems. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess
  1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
