Duties

You will be responsible for safety resource management and planning. You will provide technical safety training to workplace supervisors and employees using a wide variety of materials, publications, exhibits and visual aids. You will prepare and revise local safety instructions and guides that are relevant to current or planned operations. You will schedule and perform periodic surveys and inspections to evaluate the effectiveness of NAVOSH safety requirements and practices in the work environment, e.g., office spaces, work areas, work operations/practices and conditions. You will analyze mishaps and hazardous conditions to determine origin, cause and contributing elements.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination

Qualifications

For the GS-11: Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Inspecting the work environment for hazardous operational conditions; 2) Identifying the origin, cause and contributing elements of mishaps and hazardous conditions occurring in the work environment; 3) Presenting safety and mishap prevention training to employees; 4) Advising workers on safety requirements, potential accident-causing situations and methods for preventing accidents. For the GS-09 Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Identifying and resolving hazardous operational conditions in the work environment; 2) Recording the circumstances of accidents in the workplace (e.g. witness statements, description of property damage, extent of injuries); 3) Presenting safety and mishap prevention training to employees. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education may be substituted for Specialized Experience as follows:

For The GS-11:
Have successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR
Have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR
Have successfully completed an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled. OR
Have a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.

.For The GS-09:
Have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR
Have successfully completed two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) or a degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study form among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR
Have obtained an LL.B. or J.D. that is related to the position being filled. OR
Have a combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.
