Duties
Perform carpentry duties to include constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, and door and window frames.
Perform painting duties including brushing, rolling and spraying, by using coating materials requiring special preparation and by applying coatings to ensure surfaces are protected.
Perform masonry work including repairing structures made of brick, glass brick, block or stone.
Removes asbestos containing materials in accordance with Public Works standard operating procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a physical for new hires and current employees.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- A state drivers license is required throughout the appointment.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance without more than normal supervision. Perform maintenance work associated with a variety of trades such as carpentry, painting, masonry work and building maintenance. Perform constructions or repairs such as building walls using wood, creating concrete forms and pouring concrete and stripping and repainting surfaces to protect from the elements. Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications, and determines the layout and work sequences and types of materials used for the project. Have the ability to use tolls such as hammers, saws, drill concrete mixers, measuring devices and painting equipment. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: The work requires frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, stretching, and walking. Some of the work is performed from ladders scaffolds which require overhead work in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions. Army movement is considerable when nailing, mortaring, grouting, painting, and using such tools as handsaws, trowels, paint brushes, and planers. There is frequent lifting and carrying of items that weigh 50-100 pounds. Some of the work requires that the employee handle, with the use of hand truck, items weighing up to 300 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Subject to falls, cuts, burns, bruises, broken bones, or other serious injury. Subject to extremes of weather including dust, wind, heat, rain, freezing temperatures, et cetera. May occasionally work at heights over 100 feet which are compensated by hazard duty pay. There is danger of falling from scaffolds, ladders, lowers up to 100 feet tall, and danger from flying splinters, chops, ceramics, glass, et cetera. There is frequent exposure to noise from various hand power tools, Work is done in areas that vary from "clean rooms" to areas that are noisy, dirty, and smoky. There is the possibility of exposure to fumes, infrared and ultraviolet radiation, heat, flying sparks, the glare of torches, and heated materials, the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, as well as discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, flash shield, or eye goggles. Some work exposes the worker to floor and deck surfaces which are sometimes uneven, oily, and slippery. Subject to emergency call back after normal duty hours and on weekends and scheduled overtime requirements which are compensated by premium pay. May require use of protective clothing or equipment as authorized by the WSMR Safety Office. Requires the possession of a valid driver's license to perform incidental driving to and from actual work sites. Requires attendance and completion of various vehicle driving courses.
