About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Public Works, Operations & Maintenance Division, Building & Ground Branch Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington.
Duties
Works under the general supervision of a supervisor who provides oral or written instructions concerning overall responsibilities, policies and procedures.
Acts as the section lead mechanic and makes daily oral or written assignments to subordinate personnel and is available for guidance on unusual problems.
Performs quality control checks of subordinate personnel work assignments.
Performs assignment independently selecting tools, materials, parts, methods and techniques to use and completes the work.
Completed work is subject to review upon completion for acceptability and adherence to established trade practices and standards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or able to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles prior to on- boarding.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Select tools to maintain (or repair) wood or wood-like structures, brick or stone structures back to full functionality. Paint structures for aesthetic appeal, following standard trade practices and utilizing tools of the trade - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT
Work on hard surfaces, at benches, or where material is on supports. Incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the parts of the systems worked on are in hard to reach places. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50pounds and occasionally heavier.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working both inside and outside. When outside, incumbent is exposed to rain and wind. Inside work is usually in adequately heated, lighted and ventilated buildings. Work areas may be noisy, dirty, dusty, greasy, or smoky. Exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. May be required to wear protective clothing and equipment (i.e., respirator and eye/hearing protection devices) that may be confining, restricting, and uncomfortable. Exposure to hazardous materials is possible. Injuries may occur when lifting heavy pieces of lumber or equipment. Subject to cuts and bruises when using hand tools and equipment. More serious injuries may occur when operating power tools. Is subject to skin and lung irritations and possible poison from exposure to paint fumes, roofing compounds, adhesives, solvents and other caustic materials.
