The primary purpose of this position is to provide quality instructional support to the DoD fire Protection Training School in training apprentice firefighters to meet the needs of the DoD Fire Protection community.

Duties

Research training source material (government regulations, manuals and technical orders, wiring and schematic diagrams, commercial publications, and vendor-supplied information) and develops and updates firefighting course materials. Develop and update lesson plans for broad courses in fundamentals and skills of firefighting, courses equivalent to basic undergraduate or secondary level, or a full range of subjects at the elementary and advanced levels. Conduct classroom, laboratory, and field instruction using standardized, well-established methods such as discussion, demonstration, and practical application, presents subject matter material to students. Monitor and evaluate student progress in firefighting courses covering a full range of subjects at the elementary level, secondary level courses, basic undergraduate courses (or equivalent), or broad courses in fundamentals and skills of a fire fighter. Monitor and evaluate effectiveness of fire fighter courses covering a wide variety of topics in well-established areas of a Department of Defense firefighter.

  • Must be able to lift over 40 pounds. A physical examination is required.
  • Must have the following certifications: Fire Officer I and Fire Instructor I, at a minimum, before entrance on duty date.
  • This is a CCAF Position. When applying qualification standards or clearing DoD PPP, at least an associate degree is required.
  • A recruitment incentive of 10% of the annual rate of basic pay is authorized. Completion of a 2-year service agreement is required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Individual Occupational Requirements for 1712 series andGroup Standard for Administrative & Management Positions SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience that demonstrates a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of instruction. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment in the appropriate field(s), supervising or administering a training program, development or review of training/course materials, aids, devices, etc., and evaluation of training results or work in the occupation or subject-matter field of the position to be filled that required training or instructing others on a regular basis. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D in education, teaching or subject area related to the position being filled. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Community College of the Air Force requirement: Incumbent (faculty members of the Community College of the Air Force) must meet minimum educational requirements as prescribed by the accrediting body Southern Association of College and Schools, Commission of Colleges (SACS-COC), i.e. all teachers must hold at least an associate's degree in order for the school to meet accreditation criteria. The degree should be in the teaching discipline. NOTE: If the degree is not in the teaching discipline, applicants must have documented experience, course work, and/or other training in the teaching discipline. Knowledge of fire protection training techniques, e.g., providing examples, demonstration, of equipment and/or process, eliciting appropriate experience, hands-on drills, sequence, academic counseling, simulation, gaming and tutorial. 2. Knowledge of specialized subject matter directly related to assigned course of instruction. 3. Ability to interpret technical data, prepare training materials, and evaluate course content and effectiveness. Employee must be able to interpret schematics, blueprints, and operating instructions to develop training material. 4. Ability to recognize and address student learning problems. 5. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. 6. Knowledge of Security, Safety, and Environmental Requirements. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position may require the incumbent to wear full protective clothing including the usage of self-contained breathing apparatus, climb 35 ft extension ladders, perform roof ventilation with 30 lb. power tools, drag 125 lb. dummies, work in high heat areas, operate crash and structural fire fighting vehicles, tie ropes and knots, and work in confined spaces. Additionally, they are required to pass a physical examination in accordance with the provisions outlined in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582.
