You will serve as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Locomotive) in the Base Support Vehicles and Equipment Branch, Production Division, Public Works Department Earle, of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic.
Duties
You will use heavy duty hand tools and a wide variety of special tools and test equipment to repair, maintain, and modify gasoline and diesel powered heavy duty mobile equipment such as locomotives, cranes, bulldozers, graders and many others.
You will diagnose difficult performance problems, make major and minor repairs, or completely rebuild different, but related locomotive systems, such as engines, cooling, fuel, lubricating, electrical, air systems and under carriages.
You will instruct operating personnel in the correct operating procedures of all types of transportation equipment.
You will improvise, substitute, alter and fabricate parts and materials as necessary using machining and welding techniques, on a wide variety of transportation equipment.
You will use blueprints, schematics, manufacturer's technical manuals and precision measuring equipment to make repairs, modifications and adjustments, up to one ten-thousandth of an inch.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license and must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This position may require occasional travel from normal duty station. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft.
- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
- Position may be designated Mission Essential. If so, you will be required to ensure organization/facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
- Must complete all Regional Navy Crane Center Crane Mechanic training courses, as stated in the NAVFAC P-307, within one year of employment.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
