You will serve as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Business Line of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles which have mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses. You will determine the cause of malfunctions and make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. You will complete major repairs, overhauls, and modifications, and conduct functional and performance tests on completed work. You will measure, fit, and install components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to specified clearances. You will read and interpret instructions, standards, job orders, drawings, and blueprints to determine the overall inspection needs and quality checkpoints for heavy mobile equipment repair work.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by including1. Must have an extensive knowledge of the principles behind the operation of the various types of heavy equipment along with skill in the use of diagnostic equipment to determine reasons for mechanical defects or mechanical performance problems. 2. Must have a thorough knowledge of blueprint and schematic reading. 3. In cases where equipment modifications are necessary, must have the skill and knowledge to make these modifications without technical assistance. Inspects and replaces as necessary such parts as pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, wrist pins, gaskets and cylinder liners. Repair governors on diesel and gas engines, repair and adjust injection pumps, carburetors, ignition systems, cleaning, adjusting, repairing and replacing such items as needed, troubleshooting of all systems and subsystems. Replaces fuel pumps, injection pumps, spark plugs, distributors, points and injectors. Repairs generators and starting motors, adjusting voltage, replacing switches, batteries and wiring. Overhauls transmissions, carburetors and engines, clutches, differentials, steering assembly and front ends. Overhauls hydraulic and air brake systems. Completely overhauls and rebuild specialized units such as fuel refueling and defueling systems, and turbochargers and superchargers. Inspects, repairs and replaces parts on fire pumps, etc. Inspects and repairs power takeoff and allied equipment installed on trucks.
